Militant Group to Petition US-PH Military Pact before SC

MANILA, Philippines – A group of militant activists is set to bring before the Supreme Court questions on the legality of the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) between the United States and the Philippines signed last April 28, hours before President Barack Obama arrived for his 2-day visit to the country.

The new military agreement between two oldest allies in the Asia-Pacific region allows US troops temporary access to selected local bases over the next ten years, to ‘preposition ships and fighter jets’, as well as supplies in case of humanitarian missions like natural disasters.

While majority of Filipinos welcomed the new accord, seen as a step to contain the continued aggression of China in its territorial disputes with the Philippines, a leftist group calls the agreement an ‘affront to our sovereignty’ and is determined to take its fight against EDCA to a new level – the high court.
