Chinese Media Slams Vietnamese Protest Over Oil Rig in Disputed Waters

HANOI, Vietnam – The Chinese media has reacted furiously against the protest made by Vietnam over the deployment of a deep sea oil rig by China in disputed waters, by urging its own government to ‘give Hanoi a lesson it deserves to get.’

On May 2, China has placed an exploration rig off the coast of Paracel islands, an area claimed by Vietnam but under Chinese control since 1974, and announced on its government website it will start drilling from May 4 to August 15.

Vietnam immediately demanded China to stop the drilling operation calling the Chinese action illegal since the area was within the former’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf, the oil rig being only 120 nautical miles off Hanoi coast. (Click here to read more)
