MANILA, Philippines – President Benigno Aquino III himself ordered to stop the scheduled demolition of squatters’ houses occupying portion of Libingan ng mga Bayani, a land owned by the government and considered a national shrine.
Part of the Libingan in Taguig City is being encroached onto by some 2,000 families, most of whom are retired military personnel who were allowed to build houses in the 1990s.
Mayor Lani Cayetano told reporters the President informed her and husband Senator Alan Peter Cayetano that the impending eviction of the illegal residents will no longer push through upon the order from Malacanang.
“On behalf of almost 2,000 families residing in parts of Libingan ng mga Bayani, I thank President Aquino for his immediate action on this issue. We are lucky to have a reasonable President who listens to the people,” Cayetano said. “And because of this fast undertaking, I expect that the tension in the area will now subside and that the lives of the families will go back to normal.” (Click here to read more)
