BAY VILLAGE, Ohio – A father of four from Medina was hailed a hero after he died while saving a drowning girl he didn’t even know in Lake Erie on Saturday afternoon.
Peter Radke, 43, was reportedly celebrating a birthday party for his daughter in Huntington Beach in Bay Village when he saw a girl struggling and caught in rough waters. A group of men, including Radke, immediately ran and jumped into the cold Lake Erie water to rescue her.
After the group safely brought the girl to the shore, Radke suddenly disappeared beneath the swell while his family watched in horror. He never reached the shore and was nowhere to be found for hours.
His body was discovered three hours later awashed off the shallow waters along the shoreline of the beach.
“This man is a hero,” said the Bay Village fire chief, Chris Lyons. “He went into help a young woman and lost his life in the process.” (Click here to read more)
