A female television news anchor who appeared “veil-less” or without the traditional Muslim headscarf hijab has caused a stir in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia last week and provoked a string of varying reactions on social media.
The woman was a news reader from the state-owned Ekhbariya channel and has appeared on the television to present the news bulletin at least two times with her face fully exposed in the view – an unprecedented practice in the ultra-conservative Islamic country’s television history.
While women in foreign programs appearing in Saudi television without the Islamic headdress are tolerated, those who appear in in-house or live programming are, however, required to cover their faces with the hijab.
After the female newscaster appeared on the TV last week, reactions on social media flooded, mostly condemning the supposed disrespect of the Islamic law in the Kingdom.
On Twitter, the Arabic hashtag translated as #NewsEncouragesAdornments trended while one user branded the TV channel as a “Zionist enemies of religion”. (Click here to read more)
