MANILA, Philippines – China expressed its strong opposition to South Korea’s decision to donate a corvette warship to the Philippine Navy, a report from Seoul’s The Chosun Ilbo said.
Last May 30, Korean Defense Minister Kim Kwang-jin informed his Philippine counterpart, Voltaire Gazmin, of the donation during the latter’s visit to Seoul.
The “Pohang-class corvette” is scheduled for decommissioning by Korea’s navy by the end of the year and will be sent to Manila along with a landing vessel and 16 rubber boats.
The gift, which is expected to boost the poorly-equipped Philippine Navy, came amid rising tension over maritime disputes in the West Philippine Sea/ South China Sea. It was not clear, however, whether the 1,200-ton patrol boat will come along with its weapons system. (Click here to read more0
