SINGAPORE – A Filipina domestic worker was jailed after a district court in Singapore found her guilty of stealing cash, voucher and jewelry worth SG $400,000 from her employer who is also a Filipino.
The court sentenced 48-year-old maid Mary Jane I. Escalona to two-and-a-half years in jail on Monday, January 18. She’s facing 37 count of charges and pleaded guilty to 12 counts of theft.
Escalona was working as a domestic helper for Mr. Jose Isidro Navato Camacho who accused her of stealing cash and jewelry at the latter’s residence in Rochester Drive sometime between 2014 and October 2015.
The Straits Times reported that Escalona pawned the stolen items which include undisclosed pieces of diamond rings, gold stone rings and earrings before gambling the money away at the casinos in Resorts World Sentosa and Marina Bay Sand.
Court records reportedly estimated the value of the items between US$3,000 (SG$4,064) and US $100,000 (SG$135,460) each.
The other 25 charges involved theft of a voucher worth $19,000 and an undisclosed amount of cash. (Click here to read more)
