- The UPLB student who was chided online for supposedly disrespecting Mayor Duterte shared his side in an open letter
- He said he never meant to be ‘rude’ or ‘arrogant’ towards the mayor and the ‘spliced’ video did not show the full exchange
- He also denied any link to Robredo’s daughter, or to any national candidate for that matter
MANILA, Philippines – The University of the Philippines – Los Baños (UPLB) student who received a ‘dressing down’ online for supposedly ‘disrespecting’ Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte during a forum last Friday shared his side in a lengthy open letter.
Stephen Villena, who was called by netizens – mostly Duterte supporters – from being ‘rude’ to ‘arrogant’- said he simply posed an academic question which requires an academic answer and has no intention to disrespect the presidential aspirant.
He also clarified that he rushed the question hoping for an immediate answer because it was made clear to them beforehand that Duterte was in a hurry to leave.
“And since I did not get a direct answer to my question I requested him to please answer my question directly “para makauwi na siya” [so he can leave right away],” Villena wrote on his Facebook account. “To be clear, it was Mayor Duterte who was in a hurry to leave.”
He also lamented the fact that the ‘spliced’ video posted online did not show the full exchange between him and Duterte and somehow gave people the impression that he was being arrogant and disrespectful of the mayor.
On the issue he raised with Duterte at the forum (education vs. defense), Villena said it was important to them as students and he only wanted a clear-cut answer. (Click here to read more)
