TripAdvisor: London is this year’s top destination in the world

  • London emerged as TripAdvisor’s top destination in the world for 2016
  • The UK capital jumped 5 notches from last year’s ranking to shoot to the top
  • It bested other major cities and traditional tourist spots in the world

In 2nd place is Istanbul, Turkey

Popular travel website TripAdvisor has named London as the world’s top destination for 2016, besting other major cities and traditional tourist’s spots like Paris in France, Rome in Italy and New York in the United States.

The United Kingdom capital emerged as the most-searched city over a 12-month period and had received more than a million reviews last year to receive the Traveler’s Choice award for this year.

London jumped 5 notches from last year’s ranking to shoot up to the top and overtake former number 1 Marrakech in Morocco which slides down to 3rd place this year.

TripAdvisor spokesperson James Kay attributed London’s fame among travelers to the legacy of the 2012 Olympic Games.

“This is the first time since 2012 that London has topped our world award rankings, proving that the capital’s tourism industry is still reaping the benefits of the Games’ legacy,” Kay said.

In second place is Istanbul in Turkey which was previously ranked 3rd in 2015. At number 4 is Paris which also jumped 5 notches from last year’s number 9 ranking despite the November terrorist attack that killed more than 130 people.

Rounding up the top 5 is Siem Reap in Cambodia. It was previously at second place in TripAdvisor’s top destinations in the world last year.
