An American woman has been in jail in Abu Dhabi for more than two months after she was arrested on misdemeanor charges for allegedly insulting the United Arab Emirates UAE) by refusing to speak with men who offered her help.
The 25-year-old United States (US) citizen, who was not named, was arrested and detained since February 23, said an article byNaser Al Remeithi for the state-owned The National.
According to the newspaper, the American is being charged with “insulting the country and its leaders through verbal assault.”
But the woman told the Federal Supreme Court where she is being tried that she was only waiting for a cab when two men approached her and tried to offer help.
“The men tried to help me. I had another flight to catch at 1.29am. I refused to engage with them and nothing happened,” she was quoted as telling the judge. (Click here to read more)
