A picture taken by a Reuter photographer during a Black Lives Matter protest has gone viral on social media and has been lauded and described by many around the world as “powerful”, “iconic” and “legendary”.
The poignant scene was captured on camera by Jonathan Bachman, a New Orleans-based photographer for Reuters while he was covering a Black Lives Matter demonstration at Baton Rouge on Saturday, July 9.
The black woman in the picture can be seen calmly standing with three police officers who are in full battle gear and who appears to be preparing to arrest her.
Bachman later told BuzzFeed that the woman was among the hundreds of protesters who had gathered outside the Baton Rogue’s city police department to protest the killing of Alton Sterling a few days before.
The protester were reportedly blocking the streets when uniformed riot police showed up in an attempt to disperse them and impose order among the crowd.
While some protester yelled at officers, Bachman said he noticed this unidentified woman who remains standing in the middle of the street and refused to budge. (Click here to read more)
