- A declassified CIA document has revealed that former President Cory Aquino requested US assistance to quash the 1989 rebellion
- The US government allegedly refused because of risk in killing Filipinos
- The document is part of the 12-M records recently made public by CIA
MANILA, Philippines – Just recently, America’s Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has declassified more than 12 M documents, publishing them online and making these records searchable and accessible to the public.
One of these documents included an information on the Philippine government, specifically about the 1989 coup d’état led by former military colonel-turned senator Gregorio ‘Gringo’ Honasan against the administration of then President Corazon ‘Cory’ Aquino.
The declassified document claimed that Aquino asked US for military assistance but Washington allegedly refused because of the risks of killing innocent Filipinos at the height of the rebellion.
It mentioned then Defense chief Fidel V. Ramos saying that the US government offered military assistance to crush a mutiny by dissidents seeking to topple the Aquino government. (Click here to read more)
